PCB Layout

In addition to laying out PCBs for circuits that we have designed, we routinely perform PCB layout work for customers’ own designs. These are of varying complexity, from boards providing simple connectivity through to complex high density multilayer surface mount designs. If required, we can provide input in terms of design for manufacture and test. We can also convert legacy designs from through-hole to surface mount technology where technically possible.

We strongly believe that PCBs should be laid out by a design engineer who thoroughly understands the principles of operation of the circuit itself, preferably placing and routing manually. Although more time intensive than auto-routing, this results in a board layout which is optimal in terms of manufacture, high current path routing and EMI reduction.

In recognition of his knowledge and expertise in PCB design, Paul Maisey, Technical Director of Sorion Developments is a qualified IPC Certified Interconnect Designer. This qualification is an objective evaluation of core competencies in design based upon industry standards rather than specifications of just one company.

Some examples of previous PCB layouts:

  • Automotive ECU
  • Range of high flux LED luminaires (on metal clad PCB)
  • Range of A/V distribution products
  • Covert video camera
  • Fire extinguisher control panel
  • Picture-in-picture video card
  • Autosport control units
